The story is set in Scotland in the mid-1700s, shortly after the Jacobite rebellion in the Highlands. Rebellion suppressed by the government which imposes strict controls on the Highlanders.

The young David Balfour, after the death of both his parents, is reunited with his only remaining relative, his despised hermit uncle Ebenezer who takes him in badly. Ebenezer arranges for David to be kidnapped and sold into slavery. But following a series of events David breaks free in the Highlands, seeking the help of outlaw Alan Breck Stewart, who leads him into further complications.
